#82 - The Yakuza (1974) dir. Sydney Pollack 8/10
Another great late-era turn for Robert Mitchum. Pollack mixes eastern and western culture without it being overly ham-fisted or stereotypical. I let out a sigh of relief that many of the dialogue scenes with the Yakuza were spoken in Japanese, and that it wasn’t a film with Asian actors set in Japan where everyone just decided to speak English for no reason. A few of the action scenes felt like they were edited by someone on speed, but other than that this was a worthwhile trip to Tokyo for some crime, redemption and old fashioned honor.

“You do things and do things and nobody really has a clue.” ― John Updike, Rabbit, Run
The fact that you are willing to say, “I do not understand, and it is fine,” is the greatest understanding you could exhibit.
