jsb:
This is what the internet will look like without Net Neutrality.
In other words, fucking HELL.
I don’t understand what this means? But there’s money and a plus sign and it involves the internet, which equals bad news in my brain.
I think some explanation may be in order because this is important.
Right now, everything moves through the internet at the same speed (or at least it’s supposed to). So if you want to look at Google, the data travels at the same speed as Tumblr, or Wordpress or whatever. In other words, nobody gets preferential treatment.
However, some ISP’s and companies want to change all this, to give some companies preferential treatment, so their content travels faster than others. In effect, this means they control the internet. The can decide what you do and don’t have access to, how fast your data can be accessed, how much you pay for it etc etc.
Now here’s the problem. People like John McCain are proponents of this terrifying model because of his hard-on for free market economics or whatever. The only alternative is for a regulating body to step in and make sure that everything on the internet is treated equal. Basically, McCain’s view is that government should stay the hell away from the internet because…I dunno, the government is evil and out to get you or something. So he shouts “keep the internet free! Don’t let the government regulate it!”
But this is what makes him a damn liar and a hypocrite. He doesn’t want a free internet, he wants his friends to control it rather than a public body that answers to the people rather than industry (in theory).
In short, someone is going to have to regulate how the internet works sooner or later. Net Neutrality means everything is treated equally (very similar to the internet as we know it today). Without Net Neutrality, big business and ISP’s control the internet, and as we all know, those people do not give a fuck about you or me or anyone else. They want profit and power, and the mock-up above is a pretty good prediction about what will happen if they get the control and power they want.
John Stewart does a much better job of explaining it than I ever could.
Nice round up Dave.
